BANGKOK, Aug 13 (TNA) — The Justice Ministry is proceeding with its project to build an industrial estate where prisoners will work in order to relieve congestion in jails and prepare their return to society.
The ministry’s sub-committee studying the project discussed the matter with officials of the Corrections Department. Representatives from Amata Corporation Plc, a leading industrial city developer, were also there to exchange ideas on finance for the construction and funds for freed inmates to start their careers.
At the Klongprem Central Prison, members of the sub-committee inspected dessert and plant pot production by inmates.
There, Kosit Suwinitjit, head of the sub-committee, said his panel would conclude its study in six months and the new industrial estate of the Corrections Department would operate for good prisoners whose jail terms would remain for a few years. It would relieve congestion at prisons, return punished people to society in a sustainable manner and help solve labor shortages, he said.
Mr Kosit said that the new industrial estate could be built in the eastern economic corridor, possibly in Chon Buri or Rayong province.
He pointed out that some profession laws still prohibited former inmates from starting some professions after being released from jail. (TNA)
