BANGKOK, Aug 19 (TNA) – Thailand hosts a regional
workshop on maritime transport under the International Maritime Organization
(IMO) obligations.
Organized by Thailand’s Ministry of Transport, the workshop
brought together 18 member countries of IMO and the United Nations Economic and
Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).
Deputy Minister of Transport Athirat Ratanaset said the two-day
workshop was aimed at brainstorming to lay out shipping strategy in compliance
with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
The workshop highlighted Thailand’s contribution towards the
sustainable maritime environment and safety of shipping, he said.
Participants have held discussions on legislation and how to
ensure compliance with the IMO standards.
As the election of IMO Council members was planned later
this year, Thailand wished to continue its works and contributions towards the promotion
of IMO standard and implementation of IMO instruments for safe shipping, Mr Athirat
said. (TNA)
