BANGKOK, Sept 30 (TNA) – Police have arrested one suspect after graffiti vandals extensively defaced a new mural by Spanish artist Carolina Adan Caro in Bangkok’s Charoen Krung 30 alley.
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt personally visited the site yesterday after the artwork, which was part of the recent “Krung Thep Creative Streets” initiative, was reportedly spray-painted over on Friday night. The mural, which took the artist 7-10 days to complete, was a collaboration with the European Union Delegation to Thailand.
“I am saddened,” Chadchart said, noting the action was not creative art but an illegal destruction of property. “The artwork has an owner, and this act destroys the intention of the people who created it.”
CCTV footage captured three suspects. One has been arrested, and police are pressing charges of destruction of property, which carries a potential penalty of up to three years in prison and/or a 60,000 Baht fine.
The Governor urged police to search for the remaining suspects and called on the public to help safeguard the city’s assets. -819 (TNA)
