BANGKOK, Jan 15 — The Vietnamese prime minister will support Thailand as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council while the Vietnamese defence minister agrees to joint marine patrols, according to Thai Defence Ministry spokesman Col Kongcheep Tantrawanit.
Col Kongcheep briefed reporters on Thai Deputy Prime Minister/Defence Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwon's visit to Vietnam which began Tuesday and ends today.
During the visit Gen Prawit met Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and discussed security cooperation of the defence ministries of both countries and asked the Vietnamese prime minister to support Thai investors in Vietnam and jointly develop agricultural products for mutual export benefit.
Gen Prawit also met Vietnamese Defence Minister Gen Phung Quang Thanh to discuss security and military cooperation.
He proposed the two parties form a joint working group to carry out the cooperation.
"Gen Prawit proposed joint sea patrols to ensure security and safety for fisheries by personnel from both countries.
"The Vietnamese defence minister agreed with the proposal and will form a joint working group," the spokesman said.
Gen Thanh thanked Thailand for taking good care of Vietnamese migrants and workers, Col Kongcheep said. (MCOT online news)
