BANGKOK, July 22 (TNA) – The Department of Mineral Resources said that an earthquake occurred in the Shan State of Myanmar at 12.07am about 87 kilometers from Mae Sai district of Chiang Rai province. It resulted from the movement of the Wan Ha fault and was felt in many provinces in the upper North.
According to the department, the earthquake with the magnitude of 6.4 on the Richter scale happened at the depth of three kilometers about 27 kilometers northwest of Kengtung town in Shan.
The northeast-southwest Wan Ha fault line made a left lateral strike-slip and people in Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Phayao, Lamphun, Lampang, Mae Hong Son and Udon Thani provinces sensed the quake. There were no reports of any damage initially.
The Earthquake Observation Division of the Meteorological Department reported that a 5.3-magnitude earthquake occurred in Myanmar at 5.22am today. The epicenter was four kilometers underground and was located about 82 kilometers to the northwest of Mae Sai district, Chiang Rai. (TNA)
