CHIANG RAI, Nov 8 (TNA) – A 4.7 magnitude earthquake centered in Myanmar’s Shan State sent tremors through the northern Thai provinces of Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai late last night.
CCTV footage from a home in Mae Sai district, Chiang Rai, clearly captured the shaking of objects hanging in the kitchen.
The Thai Meteorological Department’s earthquake monitoring center reported that the epicenter was located 7 kilometers underground in Shan State, Myanmar, approximately 42 kilometers northeast of Mae Sai district. Residents in Mae Sai and several other districts in Chiang Rai, as well as some areas in Chiang Mai, reported feeling the tremors.
Initial reports indicated no significant damage to Mae Sai or historical sites in the neighboring district of Chiang Saen.
A business owner at the Mae Sai-Tachileik border crossing, recounted her experience, saying she was startled awake by the earthquake and feared aftershocks. With recent flooding in the area, she expressed concerns about potential damage and the stress of dealing with both natural disasters.
Meanwhile, Chiang Mai has been experiencing unstable weather conditions for the past three days. The city has been hit by cold winds and intermittent rain, causing temperatures to drop.
Residents have been advised to take precautions against the cold and damp weather. The Northern Meteorological Center attributed the weather conditions to a moderate to fairly strong cold air mass from China covering upper Thailand. -819 (TNA)
