The Department of Mineral Resources said that an earthquake occurred in the Shan State of Myanmar at 12.07am about 87 kilometers from Mae Sai district of Chiang Rai province. It resulted from the movement of the Wan Ha fault and was felt in many provinces in the upper North.
The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation and the Meteorological Department have confirmed that their tsunami warning system remained effective despite damaged tsunami-warming buoys.
