BANGKOK, March 13 — Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha left Bangkkok on Friday for Japan to attend the 3rd UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in which he would inform participants Thailand’s experiences on coping with two major natural disasters, the tsunami in the South in 2004 and the massive flood in 2011.
Accompanied by several high-ranking officers including Interior Minister Gen Anupong Paojinda and Public Health Minister Rajata Rajatanavin, the prime minister will attend the five-day meeting, starting Saturday, in Sendai and ratify the Hyogo Framework for Action at the 2nd World Conference on Disaster, said a government spokesman.
The significance of the Framework is to seek cooperation from every concerned sector and people to help in reducing risks resulted from natural disasters, said the spokesman.
During his two-day stay in Japan, Gen Prayut is scheduled to inform participants attending the conference on his opinions and Thailand’s past experiences in reducing risks from natural disasters, on installing advance signal system and on implementation of ‘Self-sufficiency Economy’ initiated by His Majesty the King’s.
According to the spokesman, Gen Prayut will also exchange Thailand’s experiences on the two massive natural disasters with the participants during the conference.
Gen Prayut is scheduled to hold talks with his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe and the UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon on the sidelines of the conference. (MCOT online news)
