BANGKOK, Sept 6 (TNA) – The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has conducted a test run of the Kiha 183 passenger train carriages donated by Japan after the work to modify and refurbish the first three carriages completed.
These renovated carriages which can run at the maximum speed of 100-110 kilometres per hour will be in service for short tourism routes next month.
Nirut Maneephan, the SRT governor on Tuesday led media members to participate in the test run from Bangkok’s Makkasan maintenance yard to Chachoengsao station.
The 17 used carriages, donated by JR Hokkaido arrived in Thailand in December last year.
The SRT paid about 42 million baht for the shipment from Japan and modified them to fit Thailand’s one –metre gauge tracks. The second – hand carriages also need refurbishment of the interiors and repainting.
The SRT expects all 17 carriages will be ready for use by the end of next year. (TNA)
