BANGKOK, Oct 27 (TNA) — Veterinarians and trained volunteers are trying to control a widespread of rabies hitting Thailand with an attempt to provide vaccination to registered cats and dogs of not less than 80 per cent of the total, said Soravit Thanitor, director-general of Livestock Development Department.
They will start giving vaccination to registered pets nationwide during the four-month campaign, starting next March, said veterinarian Soravit.
The service is free of charge as the Livestock Development Department wants to control the deadly rabies efficiently during the 2019 government fiscal, started this October 1, he said.
Volunteers must first attended the training from experienced veterinarians, receive a certificate and, most importantly, assigned to give vaccination to cats and dogs during the campaign period. The Local Administration officials are responsible for making surveys and registration of these pets and to also procure the vaccine.
Official statistics showed that by October 22 this year, 26 areas in 18 provinces nationwide are still plagued with rabies, down from 305 area in 54 provinces earlier.
Concerned authorities are also planning to launch a birth control among strayed cats and dogs, another way to eliminate the disease, veterinarian Soravit added. (TNA)
