BANGKOK, March 2 (TNA) — The officials of the Livestock Development Department will go all out this month until June to provide free vaccination to registered dogs and cats throughout Thailand, in an attempt to control the viral disease of rabies, said veterinarian Jeerasak Pipatanapongsophon, deputy director-general of the department.
The department, during the current fiscal 2019, received a certain of budget allocated by the government for controlling rabies inflicted on people and, according to Mr Jeerasak, officials of Local Administration Organisation are assigned to conduct surveys and register cats and dogs as well as providing vaccination to a minimum of 80 per cent of registered animals.
He said the most urgent task this year requires assigned officials to stay on alert and monitor the places where the disease spread for at least six months.
Officials must also dispatch samples of animals suspected to have contracted rabies or die for unknown reasons while results must be known within 24 hours, he said.
Also, dogs and cats would be sterilized with an aim to reduce their birth and the spread of rabies, he said.
In order to enable the programme to become more successful, he said more vaccines treating rabies viral disease must be produced within the country to prevent the shortage. (TNA)
