BANGKOK, Aug 2 (TNA) — The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) on Thursday started to impose its 2,000-baht fine on the motorcyclists who ride or park their vehicles on sidewalks as a past measure failed to solve the problem.
Bangkok deputy governor Sakoltee Phattiyakul inspected the imposition of the new and high fine on Lat Phrao Road in Wang Thong Lang district. He said that last year the BMA set the fine at 1,000 baht and it proved to be unable to stop the violators.
That was the reason why the BMA doubled to fine to 2,000 baht and it had informed motorists a few weeks in advance before the imposition, Mr Sakolthee said.
For the effective enforcement of the new fine, the BMA asked the Land Transport Department to share the database on registered motorcycle owners so that the BMA could take legal action on the motorcyclists who parked their vehicles on pavements, Mr Sakoltee said.
From July 9 last year to July 21 this year, city police fined 20,659 motorcyclists for riding and parking on sidewalks and collected fines worth 11.18 million baht from them, the deputy governor said. (TNA)
