BANGKOK, Feb 21 (TNA) – The Constitution Court will deliver a ruling whether to dissolve the Future Forward Party over allegations that the party accepted a 191-million-baht loan from its leader, Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit.
Security has been tightened at the court and barricades are being placed. Police in uniform and plainclothes are on standby there since last night as the court is set to rule at 3 pm. today.
Amid speculation on the court’s decision, the court may dismiss the case and may order the Election Commission to take criminal action against the party if the loan is considered as a hidden transaction.
Otherwise, the court may not dissolve the party but ban executives from politics. In a worst-case scenario, the party may be disbanded and its executives may be also banned from politics.
However, if the court rules to dissolve the party, it will be the first time in the history of Thai politics that the party disbandment occurs a few days before the opposition’s censure debate against the government.
In December last year, the Election Commission requested the Constitution Court to rule on the accusation that the Future Forward Party violated the organic law on political parties by accepting a 191-million-baht loan from its leader to fund the election campaign. (TNA)
