BANGKOK, Jan 18 (TNA) – Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha on Monday met the United Nations’ Special Envoy on Myanmar and confirmed Thailand’s support for peaceful solutions based on humanitarianism in Myanmar.
In his meeting with Noeleen Heyzer, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on Myanmar, Gen Prayut said Thailand was ready to support and take part in solutions in Myanmar but the government was aware that problems in Myanmar were complicated and solutions needed consideration on history and ethnics.
“Problems in Myanmar must be gradually solved with efforts to create understanding and trust by the Myanmar leader. That is the first and foremost step to solutions,” the prime minister said.
He emphasized that the priorities were the stoppage of violence, negotiations for peaceful solutions and humanitarian assistance for Myanmar people. Thailand was ready to facilitate the delivery of assistance from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and the international community to people in Myanmar without discrimination, the prime minister said.
The government set humanitarian areas along the border to help Myanmar refugees and would send them back to their homeland on a voluntary basis, Gen Prayut said. (TNA)
