MAE HONG SON, April 1 (TNA) – Five temporary crossings reopened along the Thai-Myanmar border in Mae Hong Son province today to facilitate border trade and local economy after they had been closed since Nov 1, 2020, due to COVID-19.
The reopened border crossings included the Huay Ton Noon crossing in Khun Yuam district and the Ban Nam Phiang Din crossing in Muang Mae Hong Son district. Officials permitted only imports and exports and continued to ban travelers there.
Meanwhile, most Myanmar refugees already voluntarily returned to their soil after they had crossed the Salween River to the Thai side in Mae Hong Son to flee violence in Myanmar. Some refugees remained in Mae Hong Son because their houses were in unsafe areas.
Parts of the refugees who returned to Myanmar were staying in forests and on mountains for their safety concerns. They needed rice, canned fish and medicines. The Karen Thai Group in Mae Sariang district of Mae Hong Son was receiving donations to help them. (TNA)
