BANGKOK, Dec 24 (TNA) – The Minister of Natural Resources and Environment will convene a meeting to stop smuggling of electronic waste into Thailand to prevent environmental impact of hazardous waste.
Natural Resources and Environment Minister, Warawut Silpa-archa said the Commerce Minister planned to ban imports of electronic waste to tackle pollution from recycling and waste processing plants, operated in the country.
His ministry will also try to stop imports of e-waste and plastic garbage from other countries by adopting the legal measure to ban the imports of e-waste.
As the president of the national environment sub-committee, he will convene a meeting to find solutions at the beginning of next year to roll out efficient guidelines for operations at all levels.
Warawut also said his ministry was ready to give opinions to agencies concerned for consideration in issue a ban on imports of e-waste into the kingdom.
Moreover, the ministry has set up drop-off sites to receive electronic waste and old electric appliances from public members for proper management.
People can dispose of their electric or electronic waste to the Pollution Control Department, Bangkok’s 50 district offices and offices of the Natural Resources and Environment across the country. The service points will open until Dec 29.
In another attempt to preserve the environment, he said the ministry’s mobile units will be dispatched to give advice to people on pollution management and car engine maintenance.
Exhaust emission testing will be conducted and environmentally-friendly products are available for selling to interested persons. (TNA)
