BANGKOK, Jan 2 (TNA) – Officials recorded 3,425 traffic accidents, 410 deaths and 3,516 injured people on six days of the New Year travel period, with the highest death toll in Nakhon Ratchasima province.
Lt Gen Somsak Somrak, the army’s civil affairs director, said that on the sixth day (Jan 1) of the New Year road safety campaign period there were 664 road accidents, 89 deaths and 675 injured people.
According to him, drunk drivers formed the most common cause and were involved in 43.22% of the accidents, followed by speed limit violations (31.48%). Motorcycles were in most accidents (84.60%), followed by pickup trucks (4.84%). The most common period of the accidents (28.61%) was between midnight and 4am.
The highest number of accidents (24) on Jan 1 was in Kanchanaburi province. The highest death toll, 10, was in Nakhon Ratchasima and the highest number of the injured people, 31, was in Nakhon Si Thammarat.
On six days of the New Year road safety campaign from Dec 27, there were 3,425 traffic accidents, 410 deaths and 3,516 injured people.
The highest accumulated number of accidents, 109, was in Nakhon Si Thammarat. The biggest death toll, 24, was in Nakhon Ratchasima, and the highest number of injured people, 127, was reported in Nakhon Si Thammarat.
Six provinces were free of deaths, namely Tak, Phangnga, Phrae, Mae Hong Son, Satun and Samut Songkhram.
Officials impounded 1,430 vehicles including about 800 motorcycles from drunk drivers. (TNA)
