The Interior Minister presided over the opening of the Road Safety Centre, set up during the Songkran Thai New Year holiday.
During the New Year travel week from Dec 27 to Jan 2, there were 3,791 traffic accidents, 463 deaths and 3,892 injured people.
Although strong road safety campaigns reduce traffic casualties during the New Year holiday, the government remains unhappy and will intensify its campaigns to raise public awareness on road safety, the interior minister said.
Officials recorded 3,425 traffic accidents, 410 deaths and 3,516 injured people on six days of the New Year travel period, with the highest death toll in Nakhon Ratchasima province.
The week of dangerous New Year road traffic started yesterday with 420 accidents, 42 killed victims and 432 injured people.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has urged concerned authorities to explore appropriate measures to build more road safety.
