TRANG, July 5 (TNA) – HRH Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana received two orphaned dugongs under the care of her Coral Reefs and Marine Life Conservation project and named the baby dugong, stranded in Krabi “Yamil”, meaning the Man of the Sea.
Director-General of the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, Jatuporn Buruspat said that Marium, the orphaned dugong, rescued from being stranded on the beach in Trang in May and the three-month-old dugong, stranded in Krabi were received under the care of HRH Princess’s project.
Jamil is under the close care inside a nursery pool of the Phuket Marine Biological Center.
Meanwhile, local authorities set up a fund, called the “Marium Fund for Dugong Conservation” as Trang province is the country’s habitat of the biggest population of dugongs.
On July 7, a charity cycling event will be held from the Kantang train station to Koh Libong, where the six-year-old Marium is receiving daily care by veterinarians and volunteers in the waters.
The proceeds will go to the fund for treatment of injured dugongs. (TNA)
