BANGKOK, Aug 23 (TNA) — Government spokesperson Narumon Pinyasinwat mourned the death of baby dugongs Marium and Jamil and called on people to protect the Thai sea and marine resources.
Ms Narumon posted the message about the deaths of the two baby dugongs on her Facebook account. She described the deaths as the losses of Thailand’s marine resources and urged public awareness on environmental conservation, especially the protection of marine life.
Jamil died on Thursday after suffering seagrass-clogged stomach and intestine. It was in a state of shock at the Phuket Marine Biological Center after undergoing an endoscopic surgery to remove seagrass in its stomach and intestine at Vachira Phuket Hospital.
The seagrass that clogged the intestine produced gas which swelled the intestine and caused it to bleed, officials said.
The Department of Marine and Coastal Resources reported that Jamil suffered from shock and its heart stopped. Attempts to resuscitate it failed. It was pronounced dead at 9.43pm on Thursday.
Jamil aged three months was found washed ashore in the southern province of Krabi on July 1. The other baby dugong, Marium, that was eight month old got lost from its family in Krabi in April.
Mariam has died in a nursery tank from an infection exacerbated by bits of plastic lining her stomach as veterinarians were trying to save her life. (TNA)
