KRABI, Aug 19 (TNA) –
A carcass of an adult dugong was found on a beach in Krabi province on
Sunday, one day after a famous orphaned dugong named Marium died.
Nopparattara-Phi Phi Island National Park officers said the
carcass of 240-kilogram and 2.6-metre-long male dugong was found at Rai Lay Bay
on Sunday morning.
They have brought the carcass to a marine research center in
Phuket for an autopsy to determine the cause of its death.
The male dugong aged about 25 years had no wounds or signs
of illness, they said.
This sad news was reported when Thailand had just lost the
eight-month-old Marium which became famous after it was rescued in April this
year.
Officials and veterinarians who had given care to Marium for
months said she suffered an infection that was exacerbated by bits of plastic
in her stomach. Her death came after she
was attacked by an adult dugong, resulted in shock and other complications.
Several pieces of plastic were found inside her stomach.
It is estimated there are 200 of the endangered sea mammals
left in Thailand.(TNA)
