BANGKOK, Oct 20 (TNA) — Members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have pledged to cooperate closer in battling against international terrorism, said a Thai defence ministry spokesman.
The pledge was made during the 12th ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM), held in Singapore on Friday, the spokesman said.
Deputy Prime Minister/Defence Minister General Prawit Songsuwon and General Nut Intaracharoen, permanent secretary for defence, represented Thailand at the meeting.
According to the spokesman, ADMM meeting acknowledged results of the ASEAN Defence Senior Officials Meeting and they also discussed ways to strengthen ASEAN grouping, plans to counter international terrorism and to also strengthen cooperation against terrorists.
Also, Gen Prawit reiterated that his ministry is prepared for Thailand to become ASEAN chairman in 2019, the spokesman said.
ASEAN members also approved Thailand’s proposal to help solve the illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing issue, the problem raised by the European Union, the spokesman said. They would bring the issue for lengthy discussions during the ADMM meeting next year. (TNA)
