RABAT, Oct 26 (TNA) – Morocco, in partnership with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), jointly hosted, on 22-24 October, in Rabat, the first large-scale International Conference dedicated to the role of AI in ensuring the implementation of Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC).
Co-chaired by Mr. Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates of Morocco and Mr. Fernando Arias, OPCW’s Director-General, the Conference was supported by OPCW Member States including China, France, Germany, South Korea, Qatar, and the United Kingdom.
The Meeting brought together High Government officials, international organizations representatives and chemical industry world-leading experts to discuss opportunities and challenges relevant to the use of AI in chemical disarmament.
Participants to the event have been discussing the impact of AI on chemical industry, including risk, safety and security management, chemical supply chain resilience, and cybersecurity management in chemical plants.
They have also been reviewing the role of AI in preventing and detecting chemical terrorism and the role of counterterrorism efforts in advancing the CWC’s implementation.
Created in 1997 to implement Chemical Weapons Convention, the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) aims at building a world free of chemical weapons. With 193 member States, the OPCW was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2013 for its outstanding disarmament efforts.
Morocco has been strongly committed to the objectives of the CWC and the OPCW, by promoting international cooperation and capacity-building, particularly in Africa, to ensure a world free of chemical weapons for future generations.(TNA).-813
