PARIA, Nov 25 (TNA) – A Thai delegation is confidently vying for a seat in the UNESCO World Heritage Committee.
The delegation including former Thai ambassador to Paris Sihasak Phuangketkeow and Raweewan Bhuridej, secretary-general of the Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning, was in Paris on Nov 25-28 for the election of the World Heritage Committee. The seven-member delegation included specialists on natural resources and cultures. The World Heritage Committee comprises 21 members and nine of the seats are vacant.
Thailand has not been in the committee for six years. Earlier the country had been in the panel for three times. Committee members’ tenure lasts four years.
Mrs Raweewan said that if Thailand is elected, it will play significant roles in ensuring fair consideration of countries’ nomination of their natural and cultural resources to be listed as World Heritage.
According to her, Thailand is running for a seat in the quota for Asia-Pacific countries. Earlier Mr Sihasak received positive responses for Thailand’s campaign for votes. The campaign focused on the promotion of World Heritage sites among the new generation for their sustainability.
Thailand will organize the “Thai Night” event at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to introduce its candidacy to representatives of 193 member states in Paris on the night of Nov 25 local time. Thai foods and cultural shows are among highlights in the event. (TNA)
