BANGKOK, Oct 21 (TNA) — Army commander-in-chief Gen Apirat Kongsompong discussed his security opinions with the House committee on state security and assured he would neither enter politics nor become the next prime minister.
Gen Apirat attended a meeting of the House committee on state security, border affairs, national strategies and national reform. The committee earlier invited him for an exchange of opinions on security.
The army chief said the House and the committee had many concerns which were useful to the army. The discussion included the expression of opinions on situations in southern border provinces, appropriate technological application and narcotic matters, he said.
Gen Apirat said that he would not repeat his presence with the House committee but would send the army’s advisors to work with the committee instead.
“In the exchange with the House committee today, there was not any view on any political party. I did not mention the name of any party. I spoke in accordance with my roles and duties… It is a good sign of cooperation between the military and political parties. I would not be here today unless it was good,” Gen Apirat said.
He denied the rumour that he would become the next prime minister. He said that he was a military officer and a senator for the time being, so the constitution prohibited him from assuming the premiership.
“I assure that in the future I will not enter politics. I will not play with politicians. I am happy to be only a friend of politicians,” the army chief said.
Lt Gen Pongsakorn Rodchompu, chairman of the House committee, said the exchange of opinions benefited both sides and the army chief agreed to act accordingly. Many issues are classified and cannot be disclosed. Today the legislature and the operating officer in the executive cooperate and it should create long-term benefits when it comes to security,” Lt Gen Pongsakorn said. (TNA)
