BANGKOK, May 31 (TNA) – The retail-giant Tesco Lotus will
stop using all foam containers at its 2,000 stores in Thailand starting from
July 1.
According to Tesco Lotus, the move will reduce over 400 tons
of foam containers used for fresh food each year.
Since last year, the retailer has gradually replaced foam
containers with recycle materials.
Last year, the government approved the Plastic Waste
Management Road Map 2018-2030 with a plan to use 100 per cent recycled plastic
by 2027.
By the end of 2019, three types of plastic – microbeads, cap
seals and oxo-degradable plastics – will be banned. Other types of single-use plastics will also
be banned in phases.
According to the Department of Environmental Quality
Promotion, each Thai generate an average of 1.15 kilograms of garbage per day,
contributing to the 27.82 million tonnes of waste per year.(TNA)
