TOKYO, Oct 9 (TNA) – Thailand will hold the general election in February as planned in the “roadmap for democracy,” Thai Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha told his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe on Tuesday.
Prayut, who is also the head of the military junta who seized power in May 2014, is taking part in the 10th Mekong-Japan Summit in Tokyo. He held a bilateral meeting with Abe shortly after arriving in Tokyo on Monday.
“There will be the general election in February,” Gen Prayut confirmed with Abe, assuring the progress towards sustainable democracy.
The Thai premier also invited the Japanese prime minister to visit Thailand next year, as the country assumes the chairmanship of ASEAN.
Gen Prayut also thanked the Japanese leader for supporting Japan’s investment in Thailand.
On Tuesday, Japan, Thailand and other Southeast Asian nations — Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam — adopted a new three-year strategy “Tokyo Strategy 2018 for Mekong-Japan Cooperation.”
The strategy focuses on improving connectivity through promotion of “quality infrastructure” building for regional development, officials said. It is also devoted for human resource development and environmental protection.
It also cites the leaders’ commitment on regional security by addressing tensions over North Korea’s nuclear and missile programmes and the South China Sea.(TNA)
