BANGKOK, Sept 15 (TNA) – Former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra received his first family visit at Klong Prem Central Prison since his imprisonment. His daughters, Paetongtarn and Pintongta Shinawatra, and former wife Khunying Potjaman Damapong, visited him after he completed a five-day quarantine.
Thaksin returned to Thailand in 2023 after 15 years of self-imposed exile to face convictions for abuse of power. While his original eight-year sentence was commuted to one year by a royal pardon, a recent court ruling determined his previous hospital stay did not count as time served, leading to his imprisonment.
Following the visit, Paetongtarn told reporters that her father was experiencing some stress but remained strong.
A Corrections Department spokesperson confirmed a special visiting room with a glass partition was used for security.
Thaksin’s lawyer denied any special treatment, stating the former leader is being cared for like any other inmate with health conditions. – 819 (TNA)
