ROI ET, June 17 (TNA) – A rocket festival in Roi Et province turned into tragedy when a homemade rocket failed to launch upwards and instead exploded into the crowd watching below, injuring over 30 villagers.
The incident occurred in Phonthong District, on Sunday.
According to eyewitnesses, the rocket was being prepared for launch when it suddenly exploded, sending debris and flames flying into the crowd of onlookers.
Over 30 people were injured in the blast, with some suffering serious injuries. The injured were rushed to hospital for treatment.
The cause of the explosion is still under investigation. However, it is suspected that the rocket may have been improperly manufactured or stored.
The annual rocket festival is a popular tradition in Northeast Thailand, but it is not without its risks. In recent years, there have been several incidents of rockets exploding or malfunctioning, causing injuries and even deaths.
Local authorities are urging organizers of rocket festivals to take all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of participants and spectators. – 819 (TNA)
