BANGKOK, Jan 22 (TNA) – Thai
Airways (THAI) and THAI Smile launch a food waste management campaign, “Save
Food Save the World” with the help from a food research agency, Food Innopolis.
Executives for the two airlines and Food Innopolis signed an
agreement on food waste management on Wednesday.
Ministry of Transport Saksayam Chidchop who witnessed the signing
said the programme was aimed at reducing food waste by 400 kilograms per day,
which would help cut operation cost by THB20 million a year.
Thailand’s Food Innopolis is a global food innovation hub focusing
on research, development and innovation for food industry.
Beginning with Europe-bound flights, passengers will be allowed to
select food types, materials and amount ahead of the departure. It
would reduce food waste by at least 20 percent, said Saksayam.
Food Innopolis planned to provide biodegradable containers to
replace inflight single-use plastic as well, he said.
Speaking at the agreement signing ceremony, Natural Resources and
Environment Minister Warawut Silpa-archa said that food waste accounted to
about 35-50 percent of the total waste.
The programme was in line with one of the United Nations’
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to decrease food waste by half within
2030, said Warawut. (TNA)
