BANGKOK, Nov 11 (TNA) — The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration will deploy about 200 officials to clean all Krathong baskets off the Chao Phraya River within 6am tomorrow.
City Clerk Silpasuay Raweesaengsoon said the Environment Department of the BMA would have its 203 officials collect Krathong baskets in a 34-kilometer-long section of the Chao Phraya River from Rama VII Bridge to Wat Yothin Pradit in Bang Na district.
The clean-up mission was divided into three zones: Rama VII Bridge-Memorial Bridge, Memorial Bridge-Krungthep Bridge and Krung Thep Bridge-Bang Na. Forty boats and 14 trucks will be deployed for the mission that will start at 8pm tonight.
Krathong baskets made from natural and biodegradable materials would be turned into fertilizer and Styrofoam floats would be buried, Ms Silpasuay said.
Last year the BMA collected 841,327 Krathong floats, 94.7% of which were made from natural and biodegradable materials. The rest 5.3% was made from Styrofoam.
“The number of Styrofoam baskets dropped because the BMA continuously campaigns for floats made from natural and biodegradable materials. It also asks people to lay 1 float per family, couple or group or do it in an online version,” she said. (TNA)
