BANGKOK, May 31 (TNA) – Activities have been held across
Thailand to mark the “World No Tobacco Day” to raise awareness on the
bad habit as officials warn of more young smokers.
The Public Health Ministry on Friday hosted an event marking
the World No Tobacco Day with certificate presentations for individuals and
organization in recognition of their contributions to anti-smoking campaigns
and tobacco control.
Public Health Minister Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn as the
chair of the event said consistent anti-smoking efforts had helped reduce the
number of smokers which estimated at 10 million in Thailand.
Nonetheless, the proportion of young smokers was still
alarming, he said.
The Minister vowed to continue proactive actions against
smoking raising awareness on health hazard caused by smoking, particularly
cardiovascular diseases.
On June 5, tobacco control board was scheduled for a special
meeting to discuss new tax measure and World Health Organization’s
recommendation, he revealed.
Across Thailand, anti-smoking groups and school held
campaigns marking the World No Tobacco Day.
High school students joined a march on the streets of Nakhon Ratchasima
city sending out message to the public about the threats of smoking.
In Yala, over 1,200 students wearing white took part in a
morning exercise as a symbolic anti-smoking campaign.
As the World Health Organization’s World Tobacco Day falls
in the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, mosques the Muslim-majority Songkhla
province launch anti-smoking campaign urging Muslims to stop smoking
permanently.
All places worship are declared non-smoking areas while all
Muslims are urged to quit smoking during Ramadan fasting. (TNA)
