BANGKOK, May 7 (TNA) – Over 60 members of the National
Legislative Assembly (NLA) are expected to resign as they are reportedly
selected by the military junta to be senators following some ministers tipped
to join the Senate.
The list of 250 senators is expected be revealed on Friday
after a long process on nomination.
Those NLA members including NLA president Pornpetch
Vichitcholachai and two vice presidents are expected to tender their
resignation before the appointment. None
of them has confirmed the report except NLA Vice President Pirasak Porjit.
Mr Pirasak admitted their appointments might affect the NLA.
As the Election Commission is announcing and endorsing
nearly all 350 Members of Parliament this week, the military junta plans to
formally appoint 250 senators on Friday.
A committee headed by Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan
is said to complete the list of the 250 member Senate.
Of the 250 senators, 194 are selected by the committee which
is set up by the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO). Six seats are
reserved for the armed forces leaders, the supreme commander, the defence
permanent secretary and the national police chief.
The rest of them, 50, represent 10 professional and social
groups. They have been elected by panels representing their respective
groups. But the list of elect-senates
has been kept confidential. (TNA)
