BANGKOK, April 5 (TNA) – The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) does not ban water fight on Khao San Road, one of Bangkok’s major venues for the Songkran water festival celebration or Thai New Year.
However, the official event, stage and entertainment will not be organized to pave the way for coronation-related ceremonies in the vicinity on the historical Rattanakosin Island area, said BMA Permanent Secretary Silpsuay Raweesangsoon.
Normally, operators on Khao San Road and government agencies organize traditional and entertainment activities on the road during Songkran every year.
Municipal officials and police officers will be deployed to maintain order at Bangkok’s two major water playing zones on Khao San Road and Silom Road, she said.
Festival revellers are not allowed to use high pressure water guns and powder is also banned. White powder is used to put on faces and mix with water during Songkran.
The authorities ask revellers to refrain from drinking alcohol, wearing revealing clothes. Festival goers should help save water and prevent harassment. Meanwhile, Songkran activities will be held at Lumpini Park from April 11-14. The famous Phra Buddha Sihing, the famous Buddha image from the National Museum will be moved to a temporary shrine in Lumphini Park, so people can pay respects and pour water on the revered statue during the Thai traditional New Year celebration period.
