TAK, March 5 (TNA) – A Fire has burned down over 100
houses at Ban Nu Po refugee camp in Tak province, affecting nearly 300 Myanmar
displaced persons.
The fire broke out Monday afternoon and rapidly spread to
about 107 wooden shacks in the refugee camp Tambon Mae Chan, Umphang district.
Established in 1997, Ban Nu Po refugee camp is home to about
15,000 people who have fled armed conflict in Myanmar.
With only one fire engine, it took over two hours to
extinguish the fire. No injuries or
deaths have been reported.
Um Phang district officials, the Thai Red Cross and army
personnel have since delivered relief supplies for 274 people who have lost
their homes. They have taken shelter at
the camp’s central building.
Forensic officers have inspected the camp to find out the
cause of the inferno at Zone B of the camp as many believe charcoal stove
cooking is to blame. (TNA)
