SONGKHLA, Dec 28 (TNA) – Authorities in Thailand’s
southern commercial hub of Hat Yai attempt to restore confidence in security
after suspected insurgents detonated two bombs at the popular Samila Beach on
Wednesday night.
Police and municipal officials of Hat Yai on Friday
conducted door-to-door campaign in the city’s commercial quarter seeking
assistance from residents and business in monitoring against untoward incident
during the New Year holiday.
The move came after the bombing that damaged the landmark
mermaid statue at Samila Beach. Three
more explosive devices have been removed from the Beach hours after two blasts.
Security agencies believe an insurgency group is responsible
for the attack aiming to spark unrest and insecurity ahead of New Year weekend.
Police and officials asked people to stay vigilant against
suspicious individuals or occurrences and timely report to authorities.
Meanwhile, a large crowd showed up at the mermaid statue to
give support of restoration work of the much-loved landmark that was installed
at the beach some 50 year ago.
Many intended to express their confidence in security. A group of musicians will perform Friday
night to make a symbolic defiance against violence.
Tourism office of Songkhla said the incident had not
affected tourism industry; no hotel reservation had been cancelled.
No one was injured in the explosions, but the two blasts
damaged the famous mermaid statue at around 10 pm Wednesday night.(TNA)
