SONGKHLA, Sept 13 (TNA) – The worsening haze from
Indonesia prompts authorities in the southern city of Hat Yai to step up health
protection measures.
Smog from burning of farmlands and forests in the neighbouring
country has blanketed southern provinces of Thailand for two weeks.
With growing concerns over health hazard to the residents,
the municipal office of Hat Yai handed out face masks and health instructions
to people.
The city has been probably the most affected by smog in
Thailand. The level of PM 2.5,
particulate matter less than 2.5 micron, reached 55 micrograms per cubic meters
on Friday, the city’s environment office reported.
Authorities expect the problem to continue as during this
southwest monsoon period, particularly in Hat Yai which is located in on a flat
plain with poor air circulation.
Officials have issued warning for people to stay avoid
outdoor activities.(TNA)
