BANGKOK, DEC 3 (TNA) – The 2018 International Day of
Persons with Disabilities is observed in Thailand on Monday, aiming to empower
the disabled and promote their social equality.
Thailand’s Ministry of Social Development and Human Security
hosted an event to mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities,
also known as World Disability Day.
Minister Anantaporn Kanchanarat opened the event held under
the theme “Empowering Persons with Disabilities and Ensuring Inclusiveness and
Equality” at the Chaeng Wattana government complex in Bangkok.
In his opening remarks, the minister said this international
day aimed at promoting an understanding of disability issues and mobilize
support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities.
There have been two million people with disabilities
registered with the government, about 200,000 of them have been employed.
The World Disability Day event features seminars, career
workshops and exhibition of craftsmanship of people with disabilities in the
efforts to increase awareness on the integration of persons with disabilities
in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.
The United Nations proclaimed the annual World Disability
Day in 1992. This year’s theme focuses
on empowering persons with disabilities for an inclusive, equitable and
sustainable development as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable
