BANGKOK, Nov 30 (TNA) – Cultural events are planned to promote Khon dance or mask dance of Thailand that has just been listed on UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage, says Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha.
The listing of Thailand’s khon masked dance drama was approved at the 13th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Mauritius capital of Port Louis on Thursday.
Prime Minister Prayut commented that the success reflected His Majesty Queen Sirikit’s long efforts to conserve this performing art.
Khon dance incorporates music, acting, literature, dancing and masks in performances depicting the ancient epic of Ramayana or better known in Thailand as “Ramakien.”
Gen Prayut said on Friday he was proud of the performing art and vowed to continuously hold Khon conservation events. He called the Thai public to present this national pride to the world in all occasions.
At the same conference, similar dance style in Cambodia, called the Lakhoan Khaol, was also inscribed in the UNESCO list.(TNA)
