BANGKOK, Aug 28 (TNA) – In a surprising political move, Thailand’s Pheu Thai Party has formally invited the Democrat Party to join its coalition government, brushing aside past conflicts.
The announcement, made on August 28, marks a significant shift in the country’s political landscape, as the two parties have historically been on opposing sides.
Pheu Thai Secretary-General Sorawong Thienthong presented a formal invitation to Democrat Party Secretary-General Det-it Khaothong in a public ceremony, signaling a new era of cooperation between the two parties.
Sorawong expressed confidence that the two parties could work together despite their differing ideologies, emphasizing the need for unity to address the nation’s pressing issues. He noted that the younger generation of party leaders on both sides would be more open to collaboration.
Det-it responded positively to the invitation, stating that the Democrat Party would consider the proposal and make a decision after consulting with its party executive committee in a meeting tomorrow.
He acknowledged the historical tensions between the two parties but emphasized the need for a united front to move the country forward.
Democrat Party is poised to secure two cabinet positions previously earmarked for the Palang Pracharath party, as Pheu Thai Party will drop the army-aligned Palang Pracharat Party from its coalition.
This reallocation of ministerial posts comes as part of the ongoing government formation process, though specific portfolio assignments remain undisclosed at this time.
Meanwhile, Samart Jenchaiyajitrawanit, a member of the Palang Pracharath party, commented on Pheu Thai party’s resolution not to work with Palang Pracharath.
He stated that this decision was made by the MPs, but Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra needs to provide clarity to the Palang Pracharath party. -819 (TNA)
