NAKHON SI THAMMARAT, Aug 9 (TNA) – Fierce fires at the
Khuan Khreng peat swamp forest in southern Thailand continue for 12 days as
firefighters struggle to contain the flames.
Nakhon Si Thammarat fire fighters and soldiers of the Fourth
Army Region have teamed up to fight the fires that have erupted since July
29. Five districts of the province have been
affected by the raging blaze.
In Chaloem Phra Kiat district, a new hotspot was found deep
in a dense forest.
Military personnel taking part in the firefighting operation
have now focused on diverting water into the forest. They also blocked waterways and pumping water
into the affected area.
To the south of Nakhon Si Thammarat, another fire in Thung
Bang Nok-ok peat swamp forest in Songkhla have raged into a village in Khuan
Niang district. Local officials have set
up a rapid response team to work round the clock.
Firefighters in Khuan Niang which has been declared disaster
zone also resorted to water diversion method, using pumps to divert water from
oil palm plantations to extinguish the fire. (TNA)
