PHANG-NGA, August 5 (TNA) – One of the two wounded dwarf
sperm whales dies after being washed up on a beach in the southern coastal
province of Phang-nga.
The rare marine mammals were found on Hat Ban Nai Rai beach
in Thai Mueang district on Sunday. Local
fishermen then brought the whales, suffering serious wounds that impaired their
mobility, for nursing at a floating basket.
Marine experts from a conservation center and national park
rangers later examined the whales and said the species Kogia Sima was one of
the world’s rarest and smallest whales.
The larger whale, measured 2.4 meters in length, died
shortly after they were transported to a marine animal nursery in Phuket for
medical treatments. Marine experts said they were trying to determine the cause
of its death. (TNA)
