BANGKOK, July 24 (TNA) – Thailand holds “GI Market 2019” to
showcase products that have been registered as geographical Indication
products.
The Department of Intellectual Property organizes the event
at a Bangkok shopping mall to promote GI products that have specific
geographical origins and reputation based on their origins.
Thosaphol Tangsubut, director-general of the Department,
said over 60 producers from across the country had participated in the event
showcasing GI products as well as those pending for registrations.
He invited the public to meet producers and try out various
GI products at the seven-day GI Market 2019; such as Thung Kula Rong-Hai Thai
Hom Mali Rice, Doi Chang coffee, Doi Tung coffee and Sangyod Muang Phatthalung
Rice.
The Department has been promoting GI products for both
domestic and worldwide markets. The GI
Market 2019 is aimed to facilitate marketing promotion for producers of GI
products.
Thosaphol said the government hoped to increase GI products
revenue from Bt4.6 billion baht last year.
Currently 111 Thai products of 71 provinces have been
registered as GI products by the Department, 12 of them were approved this
year.
Many more local products have unique characteristics and
quality as originating from a particular country, region or locality that has
specific qualities and reputation.
The GI certification offers farmers to increase market value
of their products, particularly in developed countries, and to generate
community income.(TNA)
