BANGKOK, Dec 28 (TNA) – As the National Council for Peace and Order proceeds with its measure to impound vehicles from drunk drivers during the New Year festival, authorities impounded 88 vehicles including 63 motorcycles from drunk drivers yesterday.
Announcing the figures, Col Sirijan Ngathong, deputy spokesperson of the NCPO, said the council’s chief Prayut Chan-o-cha ordered the measure in 2015 for public safety during festivals and long holidays.
For this year, army chief Apirat Kongsompong, as NCPO secretary-general, ordered the military, police, administrators, transport officials and volunteers to impose the measure at road checkpoints.
Apart from impounding vehicles, authorities also seized driver’s licenses from 95 drunk drivers yesterday.
Col Sirijan said the numbers of arrested drunk drivers and impounded vehicles during the New Year festival had risen since 2016.
Officials impounded 3,046 vehicles including 2,477 motorcycles and prosecuted 30,152 drunk drivers in 2016, 4,354 vehicles including 3,118 motorcycles and 66,783 drivers in 2017, and 6,326 vehicles including 4,823 motorcycles and 245,356 drivers in 2018. (TNA)
