BANGKOK, Dec 24 (TNA) — The Department of Probation on Monday opened the first Electronic Monitoring (EM) Centre in the country and displayed their new batch of bracelets that will start using from January 1, 2019.
Deputy Prime Minister/Minister for Justice Air Chief Marshal Prajin Juntong presided over the launching of the Electronic Monitoring Centre, the first of its kind in the country.
He also visited the facilities and be briefed and given a demonstration of the latest batch of electronic bracelets.
Prasarn Mahaleetrakul, the director-general of the Department of Probation said that they had been trial using EM devices since 2014-2015 and had found the device to be effective in keeping track off and controlling offenders and had greatly alleviated prisoner congestion at holding facilities.
As a result of this, in 2018 the department ordered new lots of EM devices to be used with convicts with reduced sentences and offenders who were ordered by the court to use the EM.
The new batch of 4,000 EM devices are bracelet types replacing the earlier anklet types.
The new EM Centre will provide Department of Probation officers with the ability to track offenders 24 hours everyday and the new bracelets will begin to be used in January 1, 2019. (TNA)
