NONTHABURI, Nov 4 (TNA) -The United States is ready to discuss its decision to suspend its Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) for Thailand before the decision takes effect in the next six months.
US Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross met Prime Minister and Defence Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha on Sunday at the IMPACT exhibition and convention complex on the occasion of his attendance at the 35th ASEAN Summit and related meetings.
After the meeting, government spokesperson Narumon Pinyosinwat said the prime minister thanked Mr Ross for bringing leading American businessmen to Thailand and he saw their visit as a great opportunity to enhance trade and investment cooperation.
The US had been an important investing country in Thailand and played important roles in Thai economic development. The Thai government was ready to promote American companies’ investment in Thailand especially in its target industries including aircraft, aerospace, digital, biotechnology and medical industries, Mrs Narumon said.
Regarding the partial suspension of GSP on Thailand, the prime minister expressed his concern about impacts on companies and general people but he said he understood the rules of the US.
However, he asked the US, as a great friendly nation, to review its decision. The US secretary of commerce responded that the US was ready to have bilateral negotiation before the GSP decision takes effect in the next six months, Ms Narumon said. (TNA)
