BANGKOK, Sept 9 (TNA) – The United States on Monday extended its congratulations to Anutin Charnvirakul on his selection as the new Prime Minister of Thailand, pledging to work together to strengthen their deep partnership on common interest.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a statement that Washington was confident its efforts with the new government would continue to advance peace, economic prosperity, and freedom throughout the Indo-Pacific.The statement was released following Anutin’s official appointment by royal command on Sunday.
The political veteran, who is also leader of the Bhumjaithai Party, was elected by a parliamentary vote last Friday after his predecessor, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, was dismissed by a Constitutional Court order over ethical violations. Anutin’s victory makes him Thailand’s third prime minister in two years.
Anutin secured the position with a majority of votes in the House of Representatives, helped by a deal with the main opposition People’s Party.
In exchange for its support, Anutin’s new government has committed to dissolving parliament and holding a general election within four months. The People’s Party has stated that it will remain in opposition and not join the new cabinet, which is expected to be a minority government.
Anutin, 58, previously served as deputy prime minister and was a key figure in the previous coalition government. He is widely known for his role as Health Minister during the COVID-19 pandemic and for leading the effort for the decriminalization of cannabis. -819 (TNA)
