BANGKOK, Oct 31 (TNA) –The Royal Irrigation Department has a limited amount of water for distribution in the upcoming dry season and warns of water shortages in many farming zones.
Thongplew Kongjun, director-general of the department, said that the dry season would start on Nov 1 as reservoirs did not have much water, only about 30,126 million cubic meters.
He asked all parties to save water and strictly follow the water distribution plan of his department so that there would be enough water for consumption until the next rainy season.
According to him, water from four main dams in the Chao Phraya river basin is enough only for consumption, ecosystem conservation, fruit trees and perennials. Therefore, local sluicegates will be opened at times only to feed water for consumption.
Mr Thongplew asked farmers to reduce their raising of fish and shrimps in irrigated areas in the Chao Phraya river basin and in Ping, Nan, Chao Phraya, Noi, Pasak and Tha Chin rivers to prevent their losses. (TNA)
