BANGKOK, Aug 30 (TNA) – An ad hoc water management center hopes rainfalls from tropical storm Podul help solve water shortage at the country’s major dams.
More storms will come in September and October, Deputy Secretary-General of the Office of National Water Resources and director of the Temporary Crisis Center Samroeng Saengphuwong said as water reserves at many dams earlier dropped by drought.
Thailand will be influenced by tropical storm Podul until Sept 1.
He said it is this year’s third storm, entering Thailand and is moving westward at the speed of 20 kilometres per hour with maximum sustained wind of 55 km/hr.
It is forecast to be downgraded to a low pressure cell this evening.
Rainfalls, brought by the storm will help increase water reserve at major dams including Bhumibol dam and Sirikit dam and will partly alleviate drought in 14 provinces, he added.
According to the forecast of the storm’s direction, it will increase water inflow into 14 big dams and 32 medium-sized dams, currently holding water less than 30 per cent of their capacity.
The updated information on the amount of water volume will be used to assess the country’s water reserve at the end of rainy season for the water management plan in the next dry season. (TNA)
