SA KAEO, Sept 4 (TNA) – Tensions have risen at the Thai-Cambodian border near Ban Nong Chan in Sa Kaeo province after Thai authorities installed signs demanding that Cambodian villagers leave what Thailand considers its territory.
The signs, written in Thai, English, and Khmer, warn that those who do not comply face penalties, including a prison sentence of up to five years. For larger areas of encroachment (over 25 rai or 10 acres), the penalty increases to 2-15 years in prison and a fine of 10,000 to 100,000 baht.
Following the signs’ installation, a group of Cambodian villagers gathered and moved close to the Thai border, with some carrying sticks and other objects. This led to a standoff with Thai forces, who have been reinforced with additional military and Border Patrol Police units.

A source from the Sa Kaeo provincial administration noted that officials have been ordered to exercise maximum restraint and avoid direct confrontation to prevent the situation from escalating into an international conflict.
Maj. Gen. Surawit Daengchan, spokesperson for the First Army Area, stated that the situation is under control. He confirmed that Thailand has coordinated with Cambodian officials to have them manage their own people, but warned that Thai law would be fully enforced if the encroachment continues. -819 (TNA)
